Reweaving the torn fabric of the Anglican Communion has become the new Archbishop of Canterbury’s first order of business as he has appointed an Irish priest as Director for Reconciliation at Lambeth Palace.  The appointment of Canon David Porter is Justin Welby’s first significant staff appointment, and the appointment of a professional conflict resolution specialist to his inner circle of advisers may foreshadow the priorities of the new archbishop.

The leader of the Anglican Church of Canada has lobbied the Archbishop of Canterbury-designate not to extend formal recognition to the Anglican Church in North America. However, the decision who is an Anglican does not rest with the Archbishop of Canterbury.  The communion’s formal statement as to who is an Anglican looks to fellowship with the Archbishop of Canterbury and fidelity to the doctrines and disciplines set forth in the Book of Common Prayer.

We are united with the Anglican Church in North America.

It must be said, and it must be lived, that we who are orthodox Anglicans, holding to the word of God and the testimony of Jesus, stand together. We are united. We will not divide. We will not break fellowship – the gospel does not allow us to. And we will do all things “to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:3)

We give thanks to our Lord for our brothers and sisters in the Anglican Church in North America.

My dear friends,

I announce with great joy that the Rev. Steve Breedlove of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was consecrated bishop on Monday night, October 29, 2012.

This service of consecration said everything that needs to be said.

No doubt my voting against the Measure will have made me, as a former Affirming Catholic and convinced liberal, even more unpopular with some colleagues and friends. As a supporter of the ordaining and consecrating of women I gave this matter very serious thought. I voted against the Measure as proposed because it was a bad Measure, and absolutely not because I oppose permitting indeed encouraging women to become bishops now that they have served with such distinction at all other levels of the Church.

My reasons for voting against the Women Bishops Measure

By Tom Sutcliffe

I voted for women priests in 1992 and I am in principle keen that we should have women bishops in the Church of England. But I voted against the Measure being proposed for final approval yesterday. I had two main reasons for voting no.

Resolution of the South Carolina standoff would best be served by an international intervention of the type proposed by the Anglican Communion's Windsor Continuation Group, the Anglican Communion Institute (ACI) said last night in a paper released on its website.

The American-based church think tank has proposed the national Episcopal Church and the Diocese of South Carolina take up the recommendations of the Windsor Continuation Group formed by Dr. Rowan Williams.

The Archbishop of Canterbury has rejected suggestions this month’s meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council was irrelevant, saying there was much to be “grateful for” from the ten day gathering in Auckland, New Zealand.

Speaking to the General Synod of the Church of England on 19 Nov 2012, Dr. Rowan Williams said he wished to respond to criticisms the “structure and pattern of ACC meetings is designed to push to the margin some of the more difficult and controversial matters in the Communion … to focus on mind on the process and take our minds away from the arguments we are not prepared to have.”

Authorizing provisional rites for the blessing of same-sex unions will not have any negative consequences for the Episcopal Church or the Diocese of Missouri, Bishop George Wayne Smith told his diocesan convention today.

Speaking to the delegates attending the 173rd annual convention of the Diocese of Missouri, meeting in Columbia on 16-17 November 2012, Bishop Smith said the opprobrium visited upon the Episcopal Church from the wider communion for its consecration of Gene Robinson as Bishop of New Hampshire and its adoption of gay blessings had passed.

The call for the Episcopal Church to be disciplined had not been heeded, and the American Church retained its “place at the table” of the Anglican Communion, he said.

"I ask all to intercede fervently and constantly for him, because the task he is called to is more than any human being can achieve in their own strength" Bishop Harold Miller of Down and Dromore.

Statement from the next Primate of All Ireland, Archbishop Richard Clarke:

"As Archbishop–designate of Armagh, it is a genuine pleasure to extend my very best wishes to Bishop Justin Welby on his appointment as Archbishop–designate of Canterbury, and to assure him of my prayers and my very best wishes. I wish him God’s blessing in all that he undertakes in his new responsibilities and assure him of my personal support as I look forward to a new friendship in the fellowship of the Gospel."

Our proposal, while not intended to deny the honour due to Canterbury as an historic see, is an expression of the truth we hold as vital, that our identity as Anglicans stems first and foremost from adherence to the faith we confess.

I welcome the news that Bishop Justin Welby is to be the next Archbishop of Canterbury. I believe that his appointment should give hope to all of us who long to see renewal, reform and genuine unity.

November 11, 2012

“There is a great deal that is wonderfully hopeful in this appointment. Bishop Welby self-identifies as an evangelical. He is able to communicate clearly and winsomely. However, as he prepares to take up this challenging role at a very challenging time, one characteristic that has not been attributed to him is ‘courage’. So there are a number of questions which I would like to put — or at least have someone put — respectfully but seriously, to the next Archbishop of Canterbury.”

Mark Thompson of the Anglican Church League

The British press has announced, perhaps a bit prematurely, that Justin Welby, currently Bishop of Durham, is to be the next Archbishop of Canterbury. Though widely tipped in recent weeks to be the successor to Rowan Williams, the appointment is rather unusual, especially since he has only been a bishop for a very short period of time (just a little over a year).

November 10, 2012

Bishop Justin Welby has been reported to have made some initial comments about needing to rethink his stance on homosexuality. If he is serious about such and moves to the left to accommodate the homosexual lobby in England, he will further erode the position of Archbishop of Canterbury in the more conservative African and Asian Anglican world.
