New executive director for Anglican Mainstream appointed

The Trustees of Anglican Mainstream are delighted to announce that the Revd Andrew Symes has accepted appointment as Executive Secretary of Anglican Mainstream in succession to Dr Chris Sugden. Andrew will take up the appointment on 1st August 2013 and will be based at the Anglican Mainstream office in Eynsham, near Oxford

Msgr. Steenson has no worries about Pope Francis

Msgr Jeffrey Steenson, the ordinary of the Chair of St. Peter,  has urged members the of the American branch of the Anglican Ordinariate not to fret over recent news reports the new pope was not convinced of the necessity of creating a home for Anglicans in the Catholic Church.

Anglican Ordinariate expands to Canada

The Anglican Ordinariate has expanded north into Canada.  On 7 Dec 2012 the Ordinariate of the Chair of St Peter and the Archdiocese of Toronto announced the Vatican had given its approval for the creation of a deanery of St John the Baptist as part of the Houston based U.S. Anglican Ordinariate.

Msgr. Jeffrey Steenson announced that he had appointed the Rev. Lee Kenyon, administrator of St. John the Evangelist Church in Calgary as the first dean for Canada.

Announcement of the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury

The Queen has approved the nomination of the Right Reverend Justin Welby for election as the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury.

He will succeed Dr Rowan Williams who is retiring at the end of December after ten years as Archbishop.

The Right Reverend Justin Welby, aged 56, is currently Bishop of Durham. He will be enthroned as Archbishop of Canterbury in Canterbury Cathedral on 21st March 2013.

Ordinariate denies crackdown underway against traditionalists

The Ordinariate of the Chair of St Peter has dismissed claims that clergy of the newly formed home for Anglicans in the Catholic Church are being bullied by its leader, Msgr. Jeffrey Steenson, for using the traditional Latin mass – the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

On 29 July 2012 the Anglo-Catholic website posted a story stating Msgr. Steenson had discouraged his clergy from using the Latin mass, directing them to use only approved ordinariate and Catholic English-language liturgies.

Article X rule may block gay marriage for Episcopalians

Questions over Prayer Book revision and parliamentary procedure were raised by members of the House of Bishops on the morning of the 3rd legislative day at the General Convention of the Episcopal Church, meeting 5-12 July 2012 in Indianapolis. 

On 7 July 2012 the Bishop of Arkansas raised the question of special voting procedures under Article X of the Constitution of the Episcopal Church in response to a resolution dealing with lectionary reform.  However, his query as to what constitutes a majority in the House of Bishops under Article X of the Constitution has a direct bearing on the Resolution A049: “Authorize Liturgical Resources for Blessing Same-Gender Relationships”.  The inability to muster a majority under the Article X voting rules makes it likely that the trial rites for the blessing of same sex unions will fail to pass this General Convention.

Lost in the wilderness

An appraisal of the archepiscopate of Dr. Rowan Williams by Tom Sutcliffe, a lay member of the Church of England's General Synod from the Diocese of Southwark for the past 22 years.  Written from an "Affirming Catholicism" perspective, a shorter version of this article appeared in the Spectator.

At the end of 2012 when he retires to Magdalene College, Cambridge Rowan Williams will have been Primate of All England for a decade. He did not need to retire until June 14, 2020. Various commentators after the announcement of his return to academe in a prestigious but largely honorary role described the post of Archbishop of Canterbury, primus inter pares of the Anglican Communion, as an “impossible job”. But, sadly, it is Rowan whose tenure of the job has made it seem so.

Reordination not a rejection of Anglicanism

The requirement of re-ordination for Anglican priests entering the Catholic priesthood is not a rejection of Anglican orders, the head of the American branch of the Anglican Ordinariate said last week during his service of installation in Houston, but an invocation of the Holy Spirit seeking to restore a divided church.

On 12 Feb 2012 Fr. Jeffrey Steenson was installed by the Archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Donald Wuerl and the Archbishop of Houston, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, and ten other Roman Catholic bishops at Houston’s Cathedral of the Sacred Heart as the first Ordinary of the Chair of St Peter.

Welsh church leaders reject presumed consent for organ donations

Church leaders in Wales have expressed profound misgivings over government proposals to establish a presumed consent rule for organ donations.

The “positive ethos of donation as a free gift” the Anglican, Catholic and Orthodox leaders said on 23 January 2012 was being “endangered by an ill-judged if well-intentioned proposal to move from voluntary donation to presumed consent.”

Jeffrey Steenson to lead the Anglican Ordinariate in the U.S.

The Vatican has appointed the former bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of the Rio Grande to head up the American branch of the Anglican Ordinariate.

On 1 Jan 2012 the Vatican announced that Fr. Jeffrey Steenson had been named the Ordinary for the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter.  The American branch of the ordinariate will be based in Houston, Texas and is the second national jurisdiction for former Anglicans established under the provisions of Pope Benedict's 2009 apostolic constitution "Anglicanorum coetibus”.
