Press release from the AWnglican Church of Aotearoa, NewZealand and Polynesia announcing the election of a new archbishop

New Zealand’s Anglican community has chosen the Rt Rev Philip Richardson, Bishop of Taranaki, as its new Archbishop.

He was confirmed as Archbishop-elect at a meeting in Wellington today of representatives of the country’s seven Tikanga Pakeha dioceses.

From May 1 Bishop Philip, who is 55, will become one of three Archbishops leading the Anglican Church of Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. He will continue as Bishop of Taranaki, and carry on his dual role from his New Plymouth base.

The Bishop of Argentina and former primate of the Iglesia Anglicana del Cono Sur (Anglican Church of the Southern Cone), the Most Rev. Greg Venables, has applauded the election of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio saying the Argentine Archbishop is a devout Christian and friend to Anglicans, who has stood in solidarity with the poor against government corruption and social engineering.

The Church Insurance Group has agreed to pay $75,000 to settle a civil lawsuit brought against the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and Bishop Andrew Waldo of Upper South Carolina by the wife of the former dean of the Cathedral.

In a letter to members of the congregation dated 11 Dec 2012, senior warden Mark James said the cathedral’s insurance carrier had settled the lawsuit against the advice of the cathedral chapter and Bishop Waldo, who have maintained Ellen Linder’s lawsuit had no merit.

The Anglican Network in Canada (ANiC) synod has elected the Rt. Rev. Charles Masters to be bishop coadjutor of the Anglican Church in North America’s diocese in Canada.

Delegates to the ANiC synod meeting representing the ANiC’s 69 congregations and 4000 active members met at SS Peter and Paul Anglican Church in Ottawa on 14 November 2012 to select a successor to Bishop Donald Harvey, who has announced his retirement.

For 20 years, Archbishop-designate Justin Welby has blended deep devotion to his parish communities with Church work around the world, especially in areas of conflict.

Born in 1956 in London, the Right Reverend Justin Welby was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied history and law. For 11 years - five in Paris and six in London – he worked in the oil industry, becoming group treasurer of a large British exploration and production company. He focused mainly on West African and North Sea projects. During this period he became a lay leader at Holy Trinity, Brompton in London, having been a council member at St Michael’s Church in Paris.

The Irish House of Bishops has elected the Bishop of Meath and Kildare, the Most Rev Richard Clarke as the 105th Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland.

The 4 Oct 2012 announcement elevates the church’s senior serving bishop to the top post, and postpones a potential North/South split within the Irish Church over homosexuality. Considered a liberal churchman within the House of Bishops, Dr. Clarke has moved to the center in recent years, supporting the course taken by his predecessor, Dr. Alan Harper in avoiding a clash between the liberal and conservative wings of the church.

The Iranian Christian pastor awaiting execution has been acquitted of the charge of apostasy and released from imprisonment.

Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) reports that at an 8 September 2012 hearing, the court overturned Yousef Nadarkhani’s 2010 conviction for apostasy, finding him guilty instead of proselytizing Muslims.  He was sentenced to three years imprisonment, but released for time served.

The Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) has named the Rev. Alan Hawkins to serve as the Vicar of the Anglican 1000 movement, Archbishop Robert Duncan told delegates to the church’s 2nd Provincial Assembly.

Archbishop Duncan told delegates on the opening day of the 7-9 June 2012 meeting in Ridgecrest, N.C., that Mr. Hawkins, the rector of the Church of the Redeemer in Greensboro, NC, will supervise the province’s church planting initiative – a work the archbishop characterized as being the “central” program of the province.

The Diocese of Pittsburgh  announced today that the Bishop of Bolivia, the Rt. Rev. Frank Lyons has been appointed assistant bishop in the Anglican Church in North America diocese.

According to the statement released by the diocese, Bishop Lyons “will assist with pastoral care and oversight to clergy and congregations in the Diocese of Pittsburgh during Archbishop Duncan’s tenure as archbishop. Bishop Lyons will also exercise a special superintendence of diocesan congregations located beyond the Pittsburgh area."

Statement by The Most Rev Dr Thabo C Makgoba, Archbishop of Cape Town, on the news that Archbishop Rowan Williams will step down at the end of 2012 as the Archbishop of Canterbury and take up the position of Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.

My heart is very full at the news that Dr Rowan Williams will stand down at the end of this year. We in the Anglican Communion, and indeed the wider world, have been inordinately privileged to have such an able theologian and deeply spiritual thinker, as Archbishop of Canterbury over the last decade.

Bishop Robinson Cavalcanti and his wife, Miriam, were laid to rest last week at the House of Peace Cemetery in Paulista in Northeastern Brazil, following an emotional funeral service at Emmanuel Anglican Church in Orlinda.

Recife’s two suffragan bishops and 50 members of the clergy participated in the service.  Several hundred mourners overflowed the parish church, participants at the 29 Feb 2012 service tell Anglican Ink.

Bishop Alexander Muge of Eldoret was murdered on orders of the government of President Daniel Arap Moi, a former member of Kenya’s Directorate of State Intelligence – the Special Branch – told the country’s Truth Justice & Reconciliation Commission this week.

On 5 March 2012, Former Special Branch Inspector James Lando Khwatenge testified that the 14 August 1990 road accident in Busia that killed the outspoken bishop had been engineered by Special Branch to silence him, and to provide an example to political dissidents.

The Diocese of Recife reports that the memorial service for Bishop Robinson Cavalcanti and his wife Miriam has been scheduled for 29 February 2012 at Emmanuel Anglican Church in Olinda in Pernambuco state.  The internment will follow immediately afterwards at the House of Peace Cemetery in Paulista.

Church leaders from across Brazil have offered their condolences and prayers in the wake of the murders of the bishop and his wife.  On Monday the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams registered his shock at the news as well.

The Diocese of Recife reports that Bishop Robinson Cavalcanti and his wife were murdered in their home in Olinda in Northeastern Brazil last night.  The bishop's adopted son is alleged to have knifed his parents following a quarrel. 

On 26 February 2012, at approximately 10:00 pm the bishop returned to his home in Olinda after having visited a parish earlier in the day.  The bishop’s son is alleged to have pulled a knife on his father and stabbed him.

Cookie Richardson will represent Church of the Apostles, Columbia, South Carolina at the consecration of the Rev. Emmanuel Ntazinda, Bishop-elect of the Kibungo Diocese of the Province of the Anglican Church of Rwanda. Church of the Apostles enjoys a Sister to Sister partnership with Kibungo.

The Rev. Emmanuel Ntazinda will be consecrated and installed as the new Bishop of the Kibungo Diocese of the Province of the Anglican Church of Rwanda in a service on February 12. Ntazinda succeeds retiring Bishop Josias Sendegeya.

Cookie Richardson, a lay member of Church of the Apostles in Columbia, South Carolina, will be in attendance as the delegate from her parish. Mrs. Richardson and her husband Rich have made several trips to Rwanda over the last six years and enjoy a close friendship with Bishop Sendegeya and his wife Dorothee.

The jailing of Pastor Shi Enhao, deputy leader of the Chinese House Church Alliance (CHCA), prompted an international outcry last year, and was part of a wider crackdown on evangelical Christians by the Chinese authorities.

The Rev. Dr. Grant LeMarquand, long-serving Professor of Biblical Studies and Mission at Trinity School for Ministry, has just been appointed as Assistant Bishop to The Most Rev. Dr. Mouneer Hanna Anis with particular responsibility as Area Bishop for the Horn of Africa. His consecration will take place on April 25th, St. Mark's Day, in Cairo, Egypt and he will then be installed on October 27th in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
