Press Release: Consecration of First Anglican Asian Bishop in Latin America

Archdeacon Raphael Samuel was formally consecrated as the Diocesan Bishop of Bolivia at a Sunday morning service of the eucharist  at Cristo Luz Del Mundo (Light of the World). ... The election of Archdeacon Raphael Samuel as the Bishop of Bolivia represents a landmark in church missions in that he is the first Asian missionary to be consecrated Bishop in the Spanish speaking Anglican world.

Archdeacon Raphael Samuel was formally consecrated as the Diocesan Bishop of Bolivia at a Sunday morning service of the eucharist at Cristo Luz Del Mundo (Light of the World). The Presiding Bishop of the Southern Cone of the Americas, the Rt Rev Hector  “Tito” together with the Bishops from Peru, Uruguay and Paraguay led in the consecration of the new Bishop of Bolivia. Bishop Raphael succeeds Bishop Frank Lyons who left the diocese of Bolivia last year to serve in the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

Ruling in St. James Case Clouds California Property Titles

The recent ruling by the trial court in the case of St. James (Newport Beach) has the potential to put a cloud on the title of every piece of property sold by a California Episcopal parish or diocese since 1980 -- as well as to make future financing of their projects well-nigh impossible. Judge Kim Dunning of the Orange County Supreme Court handed down on May 1 a surprise ruling in the case involving the property of St. James's parish in Newport Beach, and held that St. James could not retain title to its property after it voted in 2004 to disaffiliate from the Episcopal Church (USA). But due to the bizarre reasoning she used to reach that conclusion, the ruling -- if upheld on appeal -- would put a cloud on the title of every previous sale or disposition of any Episcopal parish property in the State since 1980.

Military funeral for Britain's Iron Lady

The funeral of The Rt. Hon. The Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven LG OM PC FRS will take place on Wednesday 17 at St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

The Bishop of London, The Rt. Hon. & Rt. Rev. Richard Chartres, will preside at the memorial service for the “Iron Lady” Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990.

The funeral of The Rt. Hon. The Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven LG OM PC FRS will take place on Wednesday 17 at St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Schism divides Brazilian Anglican church

The Bishop of São Paulo and the former primate of Brazil have quit the Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil (IEAB), taking with them the largest Anglican congregation in South America.

On 17 March 2013 parish council of St. Paul’s Cathedral in São Paulo stated that while they remained in the Anglican Communion they were reverting to their pre-1975 status as a Church of England chaplaincy and were no longer under the oversight of the IEAB.

The Bishop of São Paulo and the former primate of Brazil have quit the Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil (IEAB), taking with them the largest Anglican congregation in South America.

Imputing the best motives

Bravo!  The Anglican Communion needs a strong voice and a strong leader to turn us back to Jesus Christ and the faith once delivered to the saints.  It is precisely this faith that has been undermined and challenged by the unilateral actions of North American leaders from The Episcopal Church (TEC) and the Anglican Church of Canada (ACoC) by, among other things, consecrating actively practicing homosexual and lesbian bishops and authorizing same-sex blessings - contrary to the Bible, apostolic and catholic teaching, and the teaching of the Anglican Communion on human sexuality, marriage and holy orders (Lambeth Resolution 1.10 1998).

New archbishop for New Zealand

New Zealand’s Anglican community has chosen the Rt Rev Philip Richardson, Bishop of Taranaki, as its new Archbishop.

He was confirmed as Archbishop-elect at a meeting in Wellington today of representatives of the country’s seven Tikanga Pakeha dioceses.

From May 1 Bishop Philip, who is 55, will become one of three Archbishops leading the Anglican Church of Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. He will continue as Bishop of Taranaki, and carry on his dual role from his New Plymouth base.

Additional Complaints Filed in Tanzania

Three complaints have been lodged with the Anglican Church of Tanzania (KAT) by members of the church's general synod alleging misconduct and fraud in the conduct of last month's election of an archbishop.

The Archbishop of Tanzania was rebuffed yesterday in his bid for a second five year term as the Bishop of Mpwapwa, the Rt. Rev. Jacobo Chimeledya, was elected primate of the Anglican Church of Tanzania.

On 21 Feb 2013 a special electoral synod was convened in Dar es Salaam to elect an archbishop and primate. Under the church’s constitution a diocesan bishop who is less than 60 years of age may stand for election for the five year position and if elected may be re-elected for a second five year term.

Liberia cancels diocesan convention

The Bishop of Liberia, the Rt. Rev. Jonathan Hart, writes that diocese has cancelled its 83rd Diocesan Convention scheduled for 6 Feb 2013 in Harper, Maryland County in Liberia.

In a statement released by the diocese, Bishop Hart said a shortage of funds prevented the diocese from holding its convention.

Bishop of Massachusetts issues call for the election of a co-adjutor

The Bishop of Massachusetts has written to his diocese announcing the call for the election of his successor. In a letter dated 15 Jan 2013 the Rt. Rev. M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE stated that he was “turning 68 this year.  From my prayer and conversation with my community, friends and family, I have decided to call for the election of my successor, a bishop coadjutor.  The election will take place at a special convention proposed for April 5, 2014.”

Clifton Daniel elected Bishop of Pennsylvania

A special convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania has elected the Rt. Rev. Clifton Daniel III to serve as provisional bishop of one of the Episcopal Church’s oldest and largest dioceses.

Global South urges Church of England to pull back on gay bishops

By allowing partnered gay clergy to become bishops, the Church of England was jeopardizing the lives of Anglicans in majority Muslim countries, who would become targets of rage from extremists who would not appreciate the distinction being drawn by the House of Bishops between sexually active gay bishops and bishops who had entered a legal relationship defined by sexual activity, but who would nonetheless refrain from sexual activity.

The Global South Coalition of Anglican Primates – representing a majority of members of the Anglican Communion – has urged the House of Bishops of the Church of England to rescind its decision to permit clergy in gay civil partnerships to be appointed to the Episcopate.

Tentative settlement reached in the Fort Worth 7 and Quincy 3 cases

A tentative settlement has been reached in the “Fort Worth 7”  and “Quincy 3” cases, sources close to the proceedings report.  Details of the agreement will not been released until all parties endorse the agreement, the sources report, but the disposition of the dispute is being characterized as “amicable” AI has learned.

If the agreement is ratified, the settlement will conclude the largest mass disciplinary proceeding launched against bishops of the Episcopal Church.

Evangelical backlash follows England's decision to allow "gay" bishops

Conservative Evangelical leaders have charged the Church of England’s House of Bishops with hypocrisy, denouncing the 20 Dec 2012 announcement that gay clergy in civil partnerships, who remain celibate, may be appointed as bishops.

... “Our grief and sense of betrayal are beyond words,” Archbishop Stanley Ntagali of Uganda said on 7 January 2013.

Conservative Evangelical leaders have charged the Church of England’s House of Bishops with hypocrisy, denouncing the 20 Dec 2012 announcement that gay clergy in civil partnerships, who remain celibate, may be appointed as bishops.

"A bishop known to be in a civil partnership could hardly be a focus of unity nor be a bishop for the whole church," the leaders of Anglican Mainstream said over the weekend, while the Archbishops of Uganda and Kenya have warned that appointment of a partnered gay bishop would be a grievous blow to the wider Anglican Communion.

Stanley Ntagali to be installed as Archbishop of Uganda

The Rt. Rev. Stanley Ntagali will be installed as the 8th Archbishop and Primate of the Church of Uganda and translated to the Diocese of Kampala this Sunday at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Namirembe.

President Yoweri Museveni along with the country’s political, professional and social leaders are expected to attend the 16 Dec 2012 along with the Archbishop of York, Dr. John Sentamu, the leader of the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans, Archbishop Eliud Wabukala of Kenya, Archbishop Robert Duncan of the ACNA, and 7 other archbishops and bishops representing the wider Anglican Communion.

The Rt. Rev. Stanley Ntagali will be installed as the 8th Archbishop and Primate of the Church of Uganda and translated to the Diocese of Kampala this Sunday at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Namirembe.

In an email sent to its members this week, Reform noted that with the vacancy for the position of bishop of Ebbsfleet, “please write to the Achrchbishops’ Appointments Secretary” to “make the case” that the next Provincial Episcopal Visitor be a “conservative Evangelical.”

Presiding Bishop taking charge in South Carolina

A gathering of national church loyalists has learned that Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori is backing their move to claim the mantle of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina.

The presiding bishop's attorney told the 15 Nov 2012 meeting of TEC loyalists   the national church had been preparing for the fight with Bishop Lawrence and the majority faction in the diocese for some time.  However assertions made at the meeting that the former Bishop of East Tennessee will be intervening on behalf of the presiding bishop supplant Bishop Mark Lawrence were unfounded.

China's last Anglican bishop dead at 98

The Amity Foundation Press reports the last Anglican bishop in China, the Rt. Rev. K.H. Ting, died on 22 Nov 2012 in Nanjing. Bishop Ting Kuang-hsun was 98.

For 57 years Bishop Ting served as president of Nanjing Union Theological Seminary, stepping down in 2010, to become the honorary president of the China’s national Protestant seminary.

The independence of the West Papuan people from their Indonesia overlords is an issue of immediate concern for the churches of Vanuatu – the former New Hebrides – the Anglican bishop of the Pacific island chain, the Rt. Rev. James Ligo.

Speaking before the start of the meeting of the Vanuatu Christian Council, Bishop Ligo criticized the government of Prime Minister Sato Kilman from abandoning its pledge to work for Papuan independence.

The Presiding Bishop’s office has appointed a former federal prosecutor and law school dean to serve as a mediator in the Fort Worth and Quincy cases.

On 19 Nov 2012 the Rt. Rev. F. Clayton Matthews wrote two letters to the nine bishops subject to complaints of misconduct for having express opinions contrary. Bishop Matthews informed the nine that Prof.  John Douglass had been appointed to be “conciliator” between the accused and the complainants.
