The Oregon Supreme Court has handed down a decision in a Presbyterian Church property dispute that effectively nullifies the Episcopal Church’s Dennis Canon in its jurisdiction.

In a 29 Nov 2012 decision in Hope Presbyterian Church of Rogue River v. the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Presbytery of the Cascades the Oregon Supreme Court held that a denominational trust does not encumber parish property unless the parish takes an explicit action to place a trust or lien on the property on behalf of the denomination.

Allegations the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Rwanda (PEAR) solicited a $250,000 gratuity from the Anglican Mission in America and its refusal led to the breach with the African church are baseless, church leaders tell Anglican Ink.

The Episcopal Peace Fellowship (EPF) has joined anti-gun activists and victim’s rights groups in calling for a boycott of the Starbucks chain of coffee shops in the U.S. to begin on Valentine’s Day, 14 February 2012.

“While states have rightfully forbidden weapons inside taverns for decades, Starbucks is alone among major retail outlets in allowing customers to bring their gun(s) – open or concealed – into its coffee shops,” said the Rev. Jackie Lynn, EPF executive director.

Dr. Zac Niringiye, the Assistant Bishop of Kampala, has informed the Ugandan House of Bishops that he will step down from office this June.  One of the most familiar faces of the Ugandan Church to American Anglicans from his frequent visits and mission trips to the U.S., Dr. Niringiye was consecrated Kampala’s assistant bishop in January 2005 at the age of 51.

He celebrates his 58th birthday in April, however the age of retirement for Ugandan bishops is 65.  The announcement was made at the 8 January 2012 House of Bishops meeting in Mbarra, where Archbishop Henry Orombi, the Primate of Kampala and Bishop of Kampala announced that he was retiring this year, with a successor to be elected in June and the new archbishop installed in December.

While it is difficult to choose the most despicable action of the Episcopal Church amongst their catalogue of deplorable activities and depravities, the use of American dollars as leverage, well, let us call it what it is, bribery -  to entice Anglican Provinces to support their cavalier abandonment of biblical orthodoxy surely tops the list.  We give praise to Almighty God that the Rwandan Church has withstood the diabolical financial incentives of the Episcopal Church and together with Primates from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, West Africa and Nigeria unreservedly endorsed GAFCON’s Jerusalem Declaration that included the affirmation:  “We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the Word of God written and to contain all things necessary for salvation.  The Bible is to be translated, read, preached, taught and obeyed in its plain and canonical sense, respectful of the church’s historic and consensual reading…”

Given this week's developments in the Anglican Mission in the Americas, that is indeed a question. If Global South Anglicans were ever tempted to think of their western brothers and sisters as "Ugly Americans" this week's resignation of Chuck Murphy & Company from the Anglican Province of Rwanda and the events leading up to it cannot help but reinforce that impression. How will this eventually be resolved? And will this action by AMiA leaders cast a shadow on the Anglican Church in North America's relationship with the Global South? I pray not. But time will tell.

The head of the Anglican Mission in America has been threatened with ecclesiastical discipline for contumacy.  Unless Bishop Chuck Murphy repents of his disobedience and apologizes for his offensive statements within seven days, the Rwanda House of Bishops will assume that he has “made a de facto choice to withdraw as primatial vicar” of the AMiA.

In letter from the Rwandan House of Bishops to Bishop Murphy dated 30 Nov 2011, the AMiA leader was chastised for disobedience and abuse of office.
